Walsall hospital wards shut as virus strikes

HOSPITAL visitors have been warned to stay away after an outbreak of a winter vomiting bug.

All wards at the Manor Hospital have been closed after Norovirus took hold.

The restriction is due to be reviewed on Friday.

However, all patients, unless affected by the bug, should still attend their outpatient appointments, the hospital said.

Nurse director Brigid Stacey said: "This temporary measure is to contain the virus on wards already affected and protect the health of all of our patients, their relatives, carers and their friends."

Professor Sam Ramaiah, director of public health for NHS Walsall, said: "Norovirus is a stomach bug which causes sickness and diarrhoea and is very easily spread from person to person.

"I would advise anyone thinking of visiting friends or family to stay away until we can be sure the virus is no longer spreading."

Relatives can call 01922 721172 for information.
