Good homes needed for little furry friends

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 08:00

The RSPCA is crying out for volunteers to help them home exotic small animals including the degu and chinchilla.

The charity, which finds homes for hundreds of animals every year, has found itself with a mountain of cages and equipment after being let down by potential animal foster carers.

The Walsall and District branch of the RSPCA now has all the equipment it needs to be able to home small animals like the chinchilla, but without people to foster them it will have to remain in storage.

Despite its desperation the charity is urging only people with real knowledge and experience of looking after small animals to come forward.

Lucy Hayreh from the Walsall branch, said: "We are looking for small animal enthusiasts. We can provide volunteers with all the equipment they need to foster small animals like degus, chinchillas, jerds and rats but they must have the knowledge and experience of caring for these type of animals.

"So many volunteers don't realise the hard work involved in caring for small animals and we have been let down in the past, which is why we have so many cages at our disposal."

The degu is a highly social and inquisitive animal and has even been named the 'destructo-rat' for its ability to escape from cages.

"Any volunteers must be confident about handling small animals," said Lucy.

"Many of the animals come to us with very specific dietary requirements and behavioural issues."

Anyone willing to foster the animals will be provided with all the equipment needed to home and care for them.

To volunteer, call the Walsall and District RSPCA branch on 01543 454 571.
