PLANS for a new supermarket have won the support of the community.

Tesco wants to build an Express store on Lichfield Road, in Bloxwich.

An application has now been lodged with Walsall Council following a successful public consultation.

More than 300 people backed the plans, citing regeneration benefits to the area and the provision of a new convenience store as their main reasons for welcoming the plans.

Around 30 per cent of people who registered their support also expressed an interest in applying for a job at the new store, where around 30 new full and part-time positions will be created.

The 280 sqm store, along with 18 car spaces, cycle and motorcycle spaces and an ATM machine would be developed on the site of the former Field Services Petrol Station.

Melanie Chiswell, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said; "The feedback from Bloxwich residents has been extremely encouraging.

"With 94 per cent of all respondents registering their support for the scheme, it seems our proposals fulfil the aspirations and requirements that many local residents have for the area."

A decision from the council is expected in February.
