Walsall North MP will stand for election

WALSALL North MP David Winnick has insisted he will not follow fellow veteran town MP Bruce George into retirement – despite being nine years his senior.

After 36 years representing Walsall South, 67-year-old Mr George announced last week he would not be standing for a ninth re-election when voters go to the polls this spring.

His reasons for retirement included his age and his desire for a younger person to take over and represent the constituency.

Mr Winnick, aged 76, was elected to represent Walsall North in 1979.

The MP has now announced he wants to secure a seventh re-election when voters go to the polls for the General Election, which is expected to happen on May 6.

He said: "I have no plans to retire just yet."

If re-elected, Mr Winnick will become one of the oldest MPs in the House of Commons, and will be more than 80 years old if he serves another full term as the representative for Walsall North.

Having worked for the borough alongside Mr George for 31 years, Mr Winnick had praise for his retiring colleague.

He said: "I'd like to pay a tribute to Bruce, who has served his constituency for more than a third of a century.

"No-one can dispute he is a very active Member of Parliament and he has served his constituents very well for a long period of time.

"There have been differences in opinion between us on some subjects, but we have also worked together with our contributions to try and improve our respective constituencies and the borough as a whole.

"I understand his reasons and I wish him well for his retirement."
