Platt aims to break Saddlers duck
Thursday, November 13, 2008, 08:00
Wolverhampton-born Platt – now at Colchester – came up through the ranks at Walsall before leaving in 1999.
But despite coming up against the Saddlers a number of times for MK Dons and Peterborough since his departure, he has yet to find the net against them.
And that is something he aims to put right on Saturday when Walsall – smarting from last weekend's FA Cup first round exit to Scunthorpe – visit the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Platt told Advertiser Sport: "I did score a couple of years ago against them at Bescot but it was disallowed.
"You always want to score against your old club and I was up against Ian Roper at the time, so it would have been nice to get one.
"But the linesman flagged for a push off the ball on the other side of the box – it was just one of those things.
"The big thing for us this Saturday is to get the win and keep the momentum going but it would be a bonus if I could get a goal."
Platt made 43 appearances for the Saddlers and was in the same youth set-up as Michael Ricketts. He admits he has a lot of fond memories from his time with Walsall.
The 31-year-old added: "I'm still in contact with a lot of the lads – I was in the youth team with Wayne Thomas who is one of my best mates.
"I am good friends with Michael Ricketts so it will be good to catch up with him. He was always a lot quicker than me but I don't know if he still is!
"I had a good partnership with him and Paul Taylor was always in our ear, telling us he wanted us to be Walsall's front two. But Ray Graydon came in, I left and Michael went not long after.
"I think the best memory I have was my debut when Chris Nicholl brought me on against Hull and I scored within two minutes – I think it got Midlands Goal of the Year from the local press."
● Despite the weekend's loss, Walsall fans can still share in the magic when the FA Cup Trophy Tour comes to The Banks's Stadium on Tuesday.
The FA Cup Trophy Tour will open at 11am and close at 7pm. Skipper Stephen Hughes will meet and greet fans between 2-3pm. For more details and to register for entry to the tour, visit www.facuptrophytour.co.uk.
