At last, a win for Willenhall
Carlton Town 0
Willenhall Town 2
A SIGH of relief was heard all around as Willenhall recorded their first win in nine attempts.
The league's bottom side edged past Carlton, but are still five points adrift at the foot of the table after they went into administration in the summer.
Willenhall dominated proceedings in the first half. Danny Yearwood fired an effort agonisingly wide from 20 yards, while a pinpoint pass from Troy Douglin was headed down into the path of Sean Pugh, who shot wide.
The visitors went close twice in quick succession, with Shaun Findlay and Jayson O'Kelly missing the target.
Keeper Steve Jackson was called into action after 25 minutes when he was able to block Karl Slack's shot, with Martin Bell hitting the rebound over. Again on 40 minutes Jackson had to produce a wonderful diving save to keep Dean Gent's 25-yard effort from breaking the deadlock.
Then, on the stroke of half-time, Yearwood squared the ball to Findley, who span past his marker and dispatched the ball neatly beneath the keeper's body to score his side's first goal in 527 minutes of football.
Carlton striker Blair continued to make himself a threat in the second half but couldn't find a way past keeper Jackson.
Willenhall kept on creating chances and were rewarded for their tenacity in the 79th minute. A weak clearance fell to Pugh who controlled the ball before rifling in a 40-yard volley, which dipped into the top corner.
Willenhall will be hoping they can continue this form in their next game on Saturday at home to Glapwell.
